The M55 was the largest US Army mechanized artillery piece in service during the 1950s. Developed post-WWII by Pacific Car & Foundry, it provided heavy, fully enclosed, tracked mobile artillery capable of supporting fast-moving armored divisions across rough terrain. The chassis utilized components from the Patton medium tank families, positioning the 810 hp Continental engine at the front to offset the weight of the massive rear turret. Although eventually phased out by the US Army, the M55 saw extended combat service with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
